2020 forced us to change the way we work. Most of us moved entire workforces to work from home. We adapted our products and services. We embraced technology to communicate and engage in team meetings. I have witnessed people thrive and adapt, lead change fast and build resilience. But I also see employees and business owners being exhausted, depleted, overwhelmed by ongoing uncertainty and struggling with burnout symptoms. Many leaders said to me at the end of 2020 they just wanted a break and a refresh for 2021. It’s now June and we are still talking about the same challenges.
I work with executives, team leaders and departmental heads around the world. Here is what they say to me:
– ‘Technically our online meetings work fine, but they don’t have the same outcomes as when we were in the office’.
– ‘My workload doubled but my hours haven’t’.
– ‘I go from one Zoom meeting to another and don’t get any real work done’.
– ‘The human-to-human connection using online platforms is not the same, we are losing the social aspect in our team.’
– ‘I am going through a restructure and am in charge of redundancies. That really affects me. Especially doing them via MS Teams.’
– ‘I don’t know how to keep my teams focussed and motivated in this hybrid set up’.
The hybrid workplace model, where most employees have the flexibility to work from both the office and from home, is fast becoming reality for most organisations. But getting hybrid right isn’t easy and leaders struggle to fully engage their teams, keep their people motivated, juggle work-life balance and find the right level of productivity without employees burning out.
